Running, Trust and the Unknown Future..



Sometimes you just have  to write.  Write to sort out emotions ,  write to understand yourself better and write to more effectivly communicate your heart, your soul and your inner being. 
I ran another race today.. Big deal, you're thinking , you talk about running all the time. But what you may not understand is running is part of who I am. It pushes me to limits I never thought possible. Drives me to do things most people are crazy and helps to block out the noises of the world and to listen carefully for the still small voice of my creator. 
Today I ran with everything I had and still was slower than the same race last year.  But I know that I did all that I could to leave everything  out on the pavement. 
As my life is swirling around me and I am trying to make sense of the future I feel like God is saying "Do you trust me, no  I mean really trust me? Do you trust me in the big things, can you let go of everything EVEN what people think of you and trust my perfect plan?" Sometimes it is so easy to say  we trust God but when put to the test we fail. 
With each strike of my feet upon the pavement today my mind thought deeper into my past, present and unknown future. "What REALLY matters in life? Is it how good of mom and wife I am? Is it my friendships? Is it my family?  My leadership? Is it my title ? My career? My weight? My age? " 
Throughout the run I hear HIS voice again..."none of this matters if you don't first trust me, all the matters is my will, not what you think is my will, are you sure your dreams are my dreams?because I have bigger dreams  for you than you could ever imagine" 
Sweat drips down my face as I feel God revealing more to my fragile heart. "Stop focusing on what you don't have and focus on what you do have.. Look around and see the blessings I have given you, I love you so much" 
I let the thoughts, sweat and tears penetrate deeper into my soul and thanked God for so many things. 
Today may not have been a victory for running my fastest, but today was a victory in being able to run with joy, and have a heart that was finally ready to step off the cliff, jump and know that God is there to catch me.

A 5k finish-but so much more!

Today my passion for running came flooding back over me. It recharged me, energized me and left me hungry for more. As crazy as it sounds although I have ran 2 full marathons and several halves today was my first timed 5k! There is something beautiful about running a race that is over so quickly! You can push yourself harder because it is a shorter amount of time. Today was one of those days.. But today I wasn't pushed by me but by my good friend Vida. We had all decided to run our own pace and meet again at the end. I was quickly separated from the group but found Vida just a few minutes into the race, I took out my earbuds and started talking to her. Shortly after joining her I realized I was going to have to push it to keep up with her! We talked throughout the miles and after mile 2 I could feel my pace slowing, my heart pounding and breath shortening, " why don't you go ahead Vida, I know you can run this faster" I cried between breathes. "No, we are running this together" she firmly replied. We continued at a pace that felt fast for me and probably slow to her. We realized we were getting very close to the finish , she said "tell me when you are ready to pick up the pace" "I thought we already picked it up" I replied, "okay after the cones " as we neared the bright orange cones I ran with everything I had left in me, pushed it beyond what I thought possible.. My body was telling me "slow down, you can't do this" by my mind screamed, go! "There it is, there's the finish line, give it all you've got" her words gave me the final encouragement I needed. " we heard the announcer say " and with a strong finish- Vida Ice and Michelle Bader- we grabbed each others hands and together crossed the finish line.
There is such a deeper meaning to this story, the symbol of who Vida and I are to each other. She has always been the most amazing friend did has pushed me in other areas when I didn't think I had anything left to give. She believes in me. I believe in her. Together we are unstoppable. Her words, here prayers , her selfless beauty that radiates so strongly out of every fiber of her body has forever changed my life.
This is more than a story of yet another one of my races but an encouragement to think about how much your words can change another persons life. When you speak life into someone you can change the level of things they can and will accomplish! How amazing is that! You have the power to build someone up and help them to become all they were created to be. What an amazing responsibility and gift that is! Take a moment today to find someone, encourage them and help them finish their own finish line of what once seemed impossible!

Freedom is a Gift!

What does true freedom mean?
I'm not talking about the freedom of speech, freedom of rights or anything physical. I am talking about the freedom of your mind and spirit. The freedom of letting go of anger, hurts and things that are out of your control. The freedom to let God sweep in like a rushing river and cover you with the unmistakable peace that passes all understanding. The freedom to have your joy dependent on God and not circumstances. I have always believed that God is my joy and peace but so many times I have not tapped into the true abundance of freedom that He wants to give me. How many times have I yelled out in anger, cried in despair, and let anger and resentment rule my thoughts and my mind? Too many to count. But recently after 34 years on this earth I feel like I am finally understanding this true gift that God wants to give us all. The gift of pure joy and freedom! The gift of joy no matter what the circumstances. Yes we will still feel pain, hurt, and heartache but then when the initial shock has passed we have the choice of freedom or chains. God promises us that he is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. How many times do we stop to claim that promise? Freedom is a choice and freedom is a gift. Think about how excited you are to give someone you love a gift you know the will treasure. I believe that is how God looks at giving us the gifts of freedom, joy and peace. Imagine his sadness as we ignore his shiny box with a big bow he has placed on our lap. Freedom means no longer being consumed by what people think of us, freedom means truly letting to of your deepest hurts, freedom means giving your unknown future to God, freedom means forgiving others and freedom means forgiving yourself. Handing over our tattered, muddy, smelly broken box to God as he replaces it with his shiny, beautiful, clean, rose scented box of freedom, peace and joy.
Today I choose freedom and pray that we will embrace this beautiful gift that is here for us all!

From the Ordinary into the Extraordinary

Running along the beach today I saw these huge rocks cascading out of the water and I thought they looked pretty spectacular, but as I kept running I discovered even bigger and more breathtaking rocks with ocean water breaking against them. I wanted to venture onto them and it was slippery and I could have easily fallen. I felt like God was saying "I am taking you farther, into the extraordinary. You may fall, you may get wet or even get cuts that sting even more with the surrounding salt water but eventually you will go to where I want you to be, I am taking you into the glorious, taking you deeper still" The question now is do I trust Him? When I fall or even am pushed into the freezing cold water and my legs are cut on the sharp barnacles, when the saltwater burns my raw, exposed wounds, when I don't know why things are happening, will I cling to Him? Will I trust him? Will I listen to His voice calling me deeper still even when I can't see Him? Will I focus on His voice alone and forget about everything else? Will I let everything else become dull in comparison to him? Or will I turn to anger? Will I get angry at my situation and make so much noise that I can no longer hear his voice? Will I splash around in the cold and get so turned around that no only am I not walking toward him but farther away? Will I make the cuts worse by striking my legs against the barnacles in anger but causing deeper wounds to myself? Today I choose to turn to Him. To follow His voice to put down the anger and let him calm the waters. Today I choose to put down my pride, put down my fight and let Him fight the battles for me. Today I choose to follow His voice even when I don't know where he is leading me. Today I choose Gods will over my own. Today my run was not about my pace, my miles, or a race, today my run was about hearing God's voice speak to me through his majestic creation! My Conflicted Runner Thoughts...

Yesterday I ran 9 long miles in the rain. When I was training for my marathon, 9 miles was not a long run, BUT now that I am just training for a half it is! So my runner friends ( and non-runner friends) I have to be honest with you..I feel like running has now become an inner struggle, a love-hate relationship..I really think it is the weather that is making me feel like this. When I run in the sun I don't feel like this so much. But I keep fighting my inner self. Am I really a real runner? Real runners don't dread their long runs do they? I am trying to decided if after my half-marathon in 2 weeks to retire my long distance running.. When I say long distance I am saying no more marathons..and possibly not half-marathons..but is that really me? I don't know. I have so many runner friends who love to run, rain or shine, long or short. I honestly don't love it that much. I will never give up running all together. But distance takes a toll on me physically, mentally and emotionally. I feel guilty when I am gone from the kids too much, and the very reason I used to love running is now why I don't. I will never be the fastest, or run the farthest, in fact I have come to realize that I am not really that good at running. The only thing that has been working to my advantage is my ability to be mentally tough and get through the pain. But I don't want to just get though the pain, I want to love it again. I want to feel the wind in my hair, the sun on my face, my heart in my chest, and my feet pounding down. I am a runner. It is in my blood, in my heart and in my soul. I believe my love will come back with the sun. I know what is different this year..I have always taken a break from outside running until Spring..but this year I have been running through the winter. I believe sunshine and shorter runs will bring back my love and I will be flying high again!

Miracles and more!

What I am going to write about to day is a little different than usual because these thoughts didn't come to me while I was running, in fact it isn't about running at all. These past few days have been so huge in my life I just had to put it into writing and share! As many of you know I have written a book called “ In Sickness and In Health” it is all about my husband Luke's journey through cancer during our first year of marriage. I wrote it over 8 years ago and had I self-published and on facebook. About a year ago I felt a stirring in my spirit that it needed to reach more people, I began to look into ways to accomplish this. If you don't already know it is very difficult to get your book published and into bookstores if you are an unknown author. The big publishers do not accept your manuscript without first being represented by a literary agent. So first you have to get a literary agent to accept and represent you and then you have to get that agent to get your manuscript into the hands of the publishers ,who accept very few. There are a few other ways, and I was offered an opportunity to try another way. I was presented a contract with Tate publishing, there was just one obstacle that I needed to overcome in order to sign with them. MONEY. At first I didn't understand why I needed to pay them but after talking to them several times and researching it I realized it is actually a really good thing. It is more like investing than paying. The publisher wants to make sure that they are not wasting their money on an author who is not serious and that it is a team effort to get the book published. On December 18th, I signed a contract with them on faith. I had NO IDEA where the money would come from to pay for the remaining money needed to fund the book. I began fund-raising on a great website called kickstarter.com. The goal was $2,000 in 30 days, and of all months I picked over Christmas! With 3 days to go I was thankful for the people that donated but we were still $1290 away from the goal. While looking through the itunes bookstore I stumbled across a book that caught my eye called The Circle Maker by Mark Patterson. The book was amazing and I couldn't put it down. It was exactly what I needed at that point in the fund raising. The book is all about the power of prayer and believing and praying for miracles. Now, I have always believed in the power of prayer but have sometimes wondered “How much do my prayers really matter?” “Can my prayers really change things?” I remember praying over and over as tears cascaded down my face for Luke's cancer to leave his leg. It never did. But what I realized then and even more this past week is that GOD STILL HEARS AND LISTENS TO OUR PRAYERS even when he doesn't answer the way we would like. If God would have answered that prayer my life would have looked a lot different. It wouldn't have involved writing this book and being able to hopefully inspire thousands of people to draw closer to our loving God through this journey. As I read through the Circle Maker, I claimed the most immediate miracle I needed. I began thanking God for the money that I was confident I knew He would provide for this vision of getting my book published. I prayed it, I felt it, I believed it. During this period I felt 100% confident that the miracle would happen yet at the same time 100% at peace if it didn't and God wanted me to go another route. As the days and hours passed we got closer and closer to our goal. Money started pouring in from friends and family. With just one day left we still needed $765 dollars. I remembered reading in the book that we should “work like it is up to us and pray like it is up to God” I realized I had not worked my hardest and I began to call and email more people. I called people that were way out of comfort zone and asked for help. I had to let my pride go and do what I believed I was called to do. I have always been a “ I can do it myself “ kind of girl ( as my mom tells stories of how I used to say that all the time as a child and I now see my own 6 year old daughter do) but that day called for me to ask others for help, was it uncomfortable? Yes, was it worth it? Absolutely! After contacting everyone I could think of, I knew NOW was the part to watch God do his miracles! As evening came I stayed close to the computer checking every few minutes to see how close we were to the goal. The numbers kept rising and the project was being funded by many peoples names that I didn't recognize. For a few hours every time I checked there were new names who had donated money towards my book! Each time a new name would appear I would announce it to my family and we would yell in delight! It was so fun having my family involved in the process. As the countdown clock on the fundraising went down, we saw the project over 100% funded. We counted “10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 Happy New Book” we yelled in unison! I was in awe and overwhelmed but not surprised. My God had once again went above and beyond my expectations. Ephesians 3:20 was brought to my mind “ Now to Him who is able to immeasurable y more than all we ask or imagine according to His power that is at work within us” As I reflect on these past few days I am astonished at the wonderful, mysterious workings of God, He has carefully orchestrated every day, hour and second of our lives. There are no coincidences. My faith has expanded with the blessing of this miracle and I wake up in anticipation of what He will do next. I challenge you to begin praying for miracles in your life, really praying hard, on your knees, tears streaming down, passionate kind of prayers, because ANYTHING is possible with God!
